It is the surgery which is being advised when only one compartment of knee is damaged. Most commonly affected compartment is Medial compartment but any of the 3 compartments- Medial (inner), Lateral (outer) and Patellofemoral (between patella and Femur) Compartments can be affected. Only the affected compartment bone is resurfaced and replaced with Metal or Ceramic prosthesis and high-density plastic material.
The advantages of partial knee replacement over total knee replacement include:
- Rapid recovery
- Less pain after surgery
- Lesser blood loss
- Lesser length of stay than Total knee replacement
Also, because the bone, cartilage, and ligaments in the healthy parts of the knee are kept intact, many patients report that a unicompartmental knee replacement feels more natural than a total knee replacement. A unicompartmental knee may also bend better.
Partial knee replacement is more technique sensitive and case selection is also very important for the success. After careful clinical and radiographic examination and fitness clearance by physician and anesthetist, surgery planning is done. For Partial knee replacement high grade precision is of utmost importance.
